Links: Fan Fiction Information & Essays

Collected here are links to insights and information that help me write my own fic, or make me go "Aha!" in general. I'm a closet anthropologist; I'm always obsessing over verious characters, trying to piece what we've seen of them into a consistent characterization, and theorize about plausible aspects of their histories and culture we didn't see on the show(s). It makes me picky about what fic I'll read and what I won't, but I'd like to think it's helping me improve my own writing.

Buffyverse
BBC - Cult - Buffy - News
Buffyverse information, from the BBC website. Still updated with related news bulletins, despite the shows' demise.

Buffyworld.com
A complete guide to all of the Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel episodes. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to dredge up exact quotes or scene locations from memory, and ended up at the transcripts on this site. Very useful.

City of Angel
Site presented as a companion giving fans an insightful resource to every episode of Angel from Season One to Season Five.

Existential Scoobies: Character Lists
Exhaustive information about the B:tVS characters, through 2001, complete with episode references and quotes. I brushed up on Jonathan and Wesley here before writing them.

Slayage.com
Any news related to Buffy, Angel, their creator Joss Whedon, or the actors involved in the shows can be found at this site. Still occasionally updated.

The Wesley Unification Theory
An indepth analysis of the character of Wesley Wyndham-Price.

Firefly/Serenity

Best available site for translating-- and learning how to spell-- the Mandarin Chinese used as slang in the Firefly TV show.

Firefly Slang
Another detailed site on the use of slang and Chinese words in Firefly and Serenity-- including some interesting linguistic analysis.

Firefly Timeline
"This timeline is intended as a guide to the events depicted in the television series Firefly (and its feature film continuation, Serenity), as well as the internal history described in that series and film."

Firefly Wiki
"This wiki is an encyclopedia of the Firefly 'verse (created by Joss Whedon), intended both as a resource to fans of the television show (and upcoming movie) and to show people what a cool show Firefly is."

A Firefly resource site, with much information on the show, including the lyrics to both the Ballad of Serenity and the Hero of Canton.

Whoa. Good Myth.
Another Firefly resource site, including quotes, a lexicon, and transcripts for all but the three unaired episodes.

Lord of the Rings
Ardalambion
A fairly comprehensive site about the "tongues of Arda", the languages from the invented world of J.R.R. Tolkien.

The Elvish Linguistic Fellowship
A website presented by the E.L.F. - an international organization devoted to the scholarly study of the invented languages of J.R.R. Tolkien. Includes some interesting articles.

The Encyclopedia of Arda
An exhaustive, detailed site containing information from Tolkien's creations.

From pointy ears to Grima's tears
Investigations of a Tolkein enthusiast. Answers to all those questions you never knew to ask ... including several that fanfic authors take for granted! Not to be missed.

A History and Complete Chronology of Númenor
Just what it sounds like. Includes timelines for Gondor and Arnor as well. Useful for those who actually want to learn about the older culture that Aragorn's and Boromir's families both sprang from.

Hiswelókë's Sindarin Dictionary
What it says on the tin: a Sindarin dictionary project. Includes information on the language from all Tolkien sources, not just the series, as well as "deduced" words identified by following the observable rules of the language bits Tolkien gave us.

The Thain's Book
From the site description: an encyclopedia of the people, places, creatures, things, and events in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. Entries include descriptions, histories, important dates, genealogies, etymologies, illustrations, sources and cross-references.

Red Hen Publications: Concerning the Potterverse
A series of in-depth analytical articles about the Harry Potter novels. They include, for example, "essays exploring and explaining the underlying paradigms of the workings of Magic in the Potterverse"; discussions of what must have really been going on in the background of several major events, which Harry's POV did not touch on; the peoples of the Potterverse; missed opportunities; and extrapolations of Harry's connections with the Dark Lord. Some very interesting thinky stuff, here.

Stargate SG-1
Arduinna's Stargate Handbook
The ultimate Stargate handbook, with information for both the original series, Stargate SG-1, and the spinoff, Stargate Atlantis. It's like an online encyclopedia, with detailed information indexed by character, race, location, story arc, episode, and various other handy references.

Gateworld.net
Detailed news, episode descriptions, spoilers, and other information regarding the Stargate SG-1 universe. This includes the original show as well as the spin-off, Atlantis. A fic archive and message boards are also on the site somewhere.

The Stargate Fanon vs. Canon Primer
Bow down at the feet of Destina, who put this together. I wish a page like this existed for every fandom - detailed support or refutation for all the things fic writers tend to take for granted, with episode references, even.

Stargate SG-1 at RDAnderson.com
It's all about the details, and this site has them; the mission database is to die for. Want to know exactly how many times Jack quotes from Wizard of Oz over the course of the series, or what all those pesky P9Z-whatever codes were? Find it here.

Star Wars
The Completely Unofficial Star Wars Encyclopedia
It's been a couple of years since this was updated, but it's still a good resource, especially for the original trilogy and a significant portion of the Star Wars EU novels.

The Seven Forms of Lightsaber Combat
Have questions about the different styles of lightsaber combat used by your favorite Star Wars characters? Details can be found here. Beware Spoilers.

The Star Wars Expanded Universe Timeline
Includes every novel, children's book, graphic novel, and video game in the "offical" Star Wars Expanded Universe, with a separate page for Infinities. For collectors, Star Wars enthusiasts, and even those trying to figure out what supposely happened when in relation to the movies, this is very useful.

Other Fandoms
Crimelab.NL
From the site description: At Crimelab.NL you can find an episode guide, quotes, facts, wallpapers, screenshots and a lot of other things related to CSI.

Cheesy name, but the site itself is quite informative. Have factual questions about the Chronicles of Riddick universe? Look no further.

Star Trek Sickbay: TOS Transcripts
Transcripts for all episodes of the original Star Trek series. Text only, and the rest of the site isn't in English, but perfect for those who just want to know (for example) exactly how many variations of "I'm not a Doctor, I'm a ..." McCoy actually said.

Fans & Fandom: The Big Picture
The Fan Fiction Universe
Some statistical comparisons; more interesting than it sounds. An essay written in 2002 about the phenomenon of fan fiction, who writes it, and why.

Strange New Worlds: Issue 14
Follow the link for the "Focus on Fandom" column, entitled "Academia Explores the Final Frontier: A look at fandom theses and dissertations". Dry, maybe, but quite interesting, if you're interested in fandom at large, not merely immersed in it.
